"When you drive down this street, these county roads, this area has been neglected," says Tyrone Bennett , the organizer behind the West King Lighting of Historical West King Street event. Free Covid 19 Testing in St. Johns County at the Agricultural Center

4/20/22 Update: "Effective 4 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 22, the NOMI Health COVID-19 testing site at the St. Johns County Wind Mitigation Building will no longer be operational due to a lack of sufficient federal funding. Since early March, daily testing numbers at the county site have been steadily declining, averaging less than 100 tests a day. This is a result of widespread testing availability in the private sector, the Federal program that mails free COVID-19 tests to individuals, and a decrease in COVID-19 infections. The Corner Market in Lincolnville St. Augustine - One of the few Black-Owned Businesses Left - is Raising Money for Major Renovations

The Corner Market in Lincolnville at 97 MLK Avenue, St. Augustine, FL has been in the Smith family's ownership for decades, and for the past seven years Nyk Smith has been running it. It is one of the few black-owned businesses left in this historic area, which was built by freed slaves, and if this building could talk, it would have so many stories to tell. "I'm really blessed to be here through generations of African-Americans, who have occupied this space, and I am just trying to keep it going," says Nyk Smith. "We're in survival mode. The community is changing so much, but I am proud and honored to keep this store open, although it has been a struggle lately with the pandemic and the renovations needed." Nyk has a vision for the Corner Market, but the 1920s building is in dire need of repairs and renovation, and she is still trying to turn the store around after the Covid-19 closings. West Augustine Housing Market Unaffordable for Locals

The West Augustine real estate market is so competive that some houses are sold within days of being listed for sale, but while small used to mean affordable housing, this is no longer the case. The high home prices mean that many locals cannot afford to buy, and rent has increased to levels that are not sustainable for most people working in the area. The St. Johns County Housing Partnership (SJHP), located on West King Street in West Augustine, has been sharing their concerns about the housing affordability through recent press releases . “Families must pay more for their housing, renters have less to get by on at the end of the month. Homeownership is out of reach for too many, and those of modest means are forced to live farther from decent jobs,” says SJHP Executive Director Bill Lazar. “This is key, especially for some employers in North Florida who are already facing a shortage of workers.” The St. Johns County Housing Partnership can often be seen out in the West Augustine c

The Last Graduating Classes Before Integration at Richard J. Murray High School Come Together to Remember

The Richard J. Murray High School Classes of 69 and 70 were thankful to be able to host a reunion this year with their memorial picnic, although it was on a smaller scale than usual after having taken a break due to the pandemic. Basketball Star Player Jasmine Kearse Returns to West Augustine to Give Back to the Community

West Augustine's own Jasmine Kearse returned home this weekend to give back to the community, where she grew up through a back-to-school backpack and school-supply giveaway at the local Calvin Peete Park also know as the Collier-Blocker-Puryear Park in West Augustine. "The community supported me through everything, and I wanted to give that support to the younger generation," Kearse said. Once the word spread that Jasmine Kearse was at the park with free school supplies, kids came running and riding their bikes from all over the neighborhood to get a free backpack filled with school supplies, while parents and grandparents showed up thankful to cross a few things off the back-to-school supply lists. Kearse, a R.J. Murray Middle School alum went on to become a star basketball player at St. Augustine High School, where she was named player of the year in 2013.
